Why do women retain water when they're on their periods?

bawl My tummy is sticking out...it feels like a basketball...my best friend sings "Basketball Jones" to me at this time of the month lol What the heck could be the biological purpose of retaining water? Is it so we don't dehydrate when we lose blood? sigh What was Mother Nature thinking?!!?

I just found out why! biggrin

"In women it usually occurs in the week or so before menstruation. During this time, the surge in estrogen triggers the production of aldosterone. This hormone makes the kidneys retain water, which tends to collect in the breasts and abdomen. Some women gain several pounds during this time. Other women simply experience a shift in the distribution in water with no weight gain. Slacks and blouses often fit more snugly, however."

You know, this explanation makes sense, because right before my period starts, I tend to urinate more often. (Can't believe I just said that right here on the org! lol ) But yes, it does suck, big time! hug

But it doesn't say why more water is necessary... Just that the estrogen makes it so. harrumph.

Hmm. I suppose that makes sense. Doesn't explain why it does that though, just how. For me, only my boobs get bigger and nothing else. It's nice being a B cup instead of my usual A for a few days. smile

AAAhhhhh Ladies, that old problem.

The aldosterone is dependant on electrolyte concentration (potassium, calcuim etc) the kidneys main function is to ballance electrolytes and water in the body. Hence for aldosterone to remain high the kidney has to ballance the electrolites with more water. Hence water retention.

Clinic in session, briefly!!
Trust me, I'm a Doctor!

So what happens to the water after?
You have a few days full of peeing every five minutes?

JasmineFire

but if you drink more water around that time, don;t you end up retaining less?
