Did Prince teach YOU "The Lord's Prayer?"

I was having a conversation with a dear friend who is also a long time Prince fan. She told me the story of a time she went to a Catholic Mass as a pre-teen, unaware of the rituals. She said, "I didn't know anything they were saying. Then, everybody started saying the chant from Controversy," (which was how she recognized it). She's sure she's not alone.

Did anyone else learn The Lord's Prayer listening to Prince? pray

I had no idea what the Lord's Prayer was until Controversy, lol.

In addition, I didn't know what the Act of Contrition was until Madonna.

The Lord's Prayer was well know by people "before" Prince came on the scene.

I knew most of it, but let's say that Controversy helped me memorize it. I was 9 when it came out.

no. I was raised Catholic, so I already knew it. first time I heard the long version, I wondered what those extra lines in there were, though, since Catholics don't include them lol

Yeah some lyrics are different depending on the source. I know when Marvin sang "The Lord's Prayer", he sang "and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors". I forget what Prince said but it wasn't that. lol

Knew it long before, but can't help hearing a snare drum kicking in at funerals and such with "for thine is the kingdom" in my head ever since hearing controversy. It tends to upset people when I start tapping my fingers on the church bench... neutral

Did he teach it to ME?

No!

It was first taught to me, when I was 5.

However, he is the reason that I could recite it, verbatim, without looking it up, since I was the age of 11! wink

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

rolleyes I'm quite aware of this. I wasn't implying that Prince exposed us all (or even most people) to The Lord's Prayer. On the contrary -- I'd never considered that someone might have learned it from Prince until hearing how my friend had.

Some translations say that. Other denominations say "forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us".

Am I the only one who barely breathes when listening to that part of Controversy?

For some reason I cant sing along, not even in my head, and I always tend to just listen. When he's finished I go right back to grooving. Wierd.

And to be honest with u, I dont remember if I already knew the Lord's Prayer. I was raised STRICT Catholic (and still worship), but I dont remember...I was only 7.

Oh I just remembered:

It was "forgive those who trespass as we forgive those who trespass against us".

Yeah, it caused quite a stir when it was released and I think a lot of us dug the song, but didn't quite know how to unpack The Lord's Prayer right in the middle of it. It's one of the reasons I call it his most controversial song. I can remember how people didn't even feel comfortable listening to it.

no, but here it is translated directly from aramaic:

butterfly

O cosmic birther of all radiance and vibration, soften the ground of our being and carve out a space within us where your Presence can abide

fill us with creativity so that we may be empowered

let each of our actions bear fruit in accordance with our desire

endow us with the wisdom to produce and share what each being needs to grow and flourish

untie the tangled threads of destiny that bind us as we release others from the entanglement of past mistakes

do not let us be seduced by that which would divert us from our true purpose, but illuminate the opportunities of the present moment

for you are the ground and the fruitful vision, the birth, power and fulfillment, as all is gathered and made whole once again

this too shall pass

Nonsense. True Christians learn the Lord's Prayer from "Sheep" on Pink Floyd's Animals.

That passage is mighty "purple" alright, but it sure as hell ain't the Lord's prayer:
