Yeah, enjoy! We had a great time doing this episode. All we ask is that you don't spoil it by posting the list while this episode is still new. Not that there's anything we can do to stop it, but we ask in good faith. We want people to experience this episode with as much surprise as us hosts. See if you can pick the trivia before each song is announced!

I love the idea, but I hate the #1 song being what it was. Too many Top 40 listeners got in there, it seems. I think if ONLY hardcore fans voted, even the top 5 would be different, slightly. But, it is what it is, and I'm sure it took a lot of effort on everyone's part to tabulate and keep track of the whole campaign, so kudos on that.

I'm really surprised at the ties too, within the countdown. The one that tied with "Little Red Corvette" I think should have been a LOT higher on the list. Also funny what tied with "Let's Go Crazy", because - well, you know.

I'll confess: I skipped to the end to find out, but I have downloaded it and plan on listening to the whole thing later.

I haven't listened yet to the podcast, but I was thinking the other day about Prince's top 20 hits according to performance on the Billboard Hot 100. Going by the song's peak position on that chart, Prince's top 20 songs are:

1.When Doves Cry (#1)

2.Liet's Go Crazy (#1)

3.Kiss (#1)

4.Cream (#1)

5.Batdance (#1)

6.Purple Rain (#2)

7.Raspberry Beret (#2)

8.U Got The Look (#2)

9.The Most Beautiful Girl In The World (#3)

10.Diamonds & Pearls (#3)

11.Sign 'O' The Times (#3)

12.Little Red Corvette (#6)

13.Thieves In The Temple (#6)

14.7 (#7)

15.Pop Life (#7)

16.Delirious (#8)

17.I Would Die 4 U (#8)

18.Alphabet St. (#8)

19.I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man (#10)

20.I Wanna Be Your Lover (#11)

It will be interesting to see how the Peach & Black list compares to this one...

Interesting points, Ernest. I'm not so sure there were too many "Top 40 listeners" though. I think it was just more the fact that those tracks from the 'classic' era are loved more consistently across the board. For example, most P fans I know love a lot of his post-1993 material, but the only difference is that there isn't any consistency about which of those post-1993 tracks are better than others. For example:

Fan A votes for: Let's Go Crazy, The One, Musicology

Fan B votes for: The Greatest Romance, Let's Go Crazy, Colonized Mind

Fan C votes for: Future Soul Song, 3121, Let's Go Crazy

Each voter has selected more post-1993 tracks than 'classic' era tracks. But, the 'classic' era track is voted for more consistently... I dunno, just my thought.

Great show. Some odd choices and some obvious ones.

Here are some of my choices during the voting:

I agree with both of you. I'm sure there is not a single one of us that is going to agree 100% with the results. But "Wow" ( my homage to the P&B crew) what a ride listening to that podcast. My personal list might be different...but I cannot argue what songs did make it into the top 20. I would like to know how the rest of the songs rated sometime in the future if you guys ever get a chance.

Not to give anything away, but...

i love "forever in my life" showing up. amazing. it was one of my favorite tracks when i first started getting into prince's music. glad to hear that i'm not alone in loving it. the beautiful ones is a great pick, too.

a few surprises for me are -- where are Do Me Baby, Power Fantastic, and 7? all seem like top 20 material. (and next time let me vote for we can funk, please, even though i'm sure it wouldn't be near the top)

i couldn't agree more with the comment about the lack of post 1990 material. 7, shh, calhoun square, or something would've been nice.

fantatic job overall

Listening to the interesting countdown of your survey I just think that perhaps it didn't last long enough. Sure, there was no proper way to hold the tension over the span of twelve weeks or so, but I'd been curious what the results then had been.

Be it! Taking a risk is always an adventure.

Just listening now. It's really making me laugh that after each song the phrases: "WOW", "I can't believe this is in the top 20" is spoken with such genuine surprise. The passion of these guys is amazing. Well done, it is an enjoyable listen and has inspired me to listen to many songs again. 'Anna Stesia' sounds like it's never sound before. It's always good to hear other people talk about songs with such enthusiasm because it can help you to hear it in a new way biggrin

[Edited 9/13/10 15:33pm]

Yeah, that's why we did the show like that (with MC, Playa and Captain not knowing the list before hitting record). We wanted that gut reaction to each of the songs. Although it's true there's a certain similarity between each of the songs (without giving anything away), I think we were pleasantly surprised that a good portion of non-single, non-hits and B-sides made the top 20. Nice voting people cool

Regarding fanzines who carried out polls, Uptown magazine regularly conducted fan's favourites polls.

Bit surprised that 90s tracks like Gett Off and 7 didn't dent the top twenty but its very strong as is. Look forward to seeing the compete list of votes if you post them eventually.

Chart position doesn't suggest popularlty because they could have targetted a quiet week. It would need a sales vs total share of sales statistic that allows for the by-era dropoff in CD popularity vs downloads etc.

I won't name names, cause you asked not to, but I will say: Great show and great list, with quite some surprises.

But I was a bit non-plussed of the lack of appreciation on the team's side for track no. 15 and no. 3 (from the same album).

Maybe you could do a show where you invite 16 people on the air to speak their individual part about how and why a specific song on the list was really great or important to them . that would ensure the genuine enthusiasm for each track on the top 20.

Would also like to know all the other songs that were close and how many voted for them... This countdown makes me even more appreciative of Prince's musical genius.........

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

Nice Work. Thanks for taking the time and effort compiling this list. A few nice surprises made it, #20,#19,#15,#5,#3. Biggest surprise was for me #16, really? Can't wait to see the entire list, find out where some personal favorite tracks ended up. Thanks again.

Just finished listening and I really loved that ... I want to sit in with you boys next time!

I have no argument with the list.... plenty of suprises. There was one song in around 7 or 6 which totally shocked me probably in a negative way because I just didn't think it was worthy but hey whatever

Good job
