3 Chains O'Gold film: WTF???!!!...

Watched it again after 15 years the other day.

This film is nonsense!

So 1st and 4most: why the butchering edits on most songs? Why not putting them entirely since the videos were shot anyway?!

And why no videos 4 "Arrogance", "The Flow", "And God Created Woman", "3 Chains O' Gold" (despite the orchestral version) and "The sacrifice Of Victor"? if that goddamn album and film was supposed 2 tell a story what's the point in skipping the end of the story if u're gonna tell it anyway?

And what the hell's that story about anyway?

1st, 7 dudes (who?) kill Mayte's father (why?). Then Mayte goes to MPLS (why?) and sees on the news that Prince is kind of encouraging a violent riot (why?), so she goes there and gives him her precious gold chains (why?). Then Prince puts his whole own band in jail (why?), fails to fuck a woman because he thinks of Mayte (why: they just met?) and then frees his band 4 a photoshoot (!!!). Then he meets Mayte again and they fall in love and as she worries about the 7 dudes, he tells her that she can relax because "the max is in control" (what the fuck is "the max" anyway?) and they have wonderful times together but suddenly, as she makes an horrible nightmare, he decides to leave her (why?) and he takes a train to Japan (how on earth do u reach Japan by train if u're in the USA?!), where he claims he's such a "continental" hotshot to the crowd and possibly fucks Carmen (but as she's been edited out, we don't know), but in the end he decides to get back to Mayte because he can't put her outta his mind, and suddenly we skip 2 songs and jump to "7", which is slaughtered by interviews of the bandmembers about Mayte (why? and who cares what they think anyway?) and Prince kills both the seven dudes and his past selves (why?) and then the good guys won and we skip one more song and jump to this instrumental version of "3 Chains O'Gold" with Mayte reading her infamous letter about Prince's namechange and he signs a contract with Japanese executives (why?), which is so absurd because this is all about the name change, which happened in 1993 while this film/albums' concept goes back to late 1991, at a time when Prince wasn't thinking of changing his name or leaving Warner Bros, meaning that Prince suddenly changed the plot to make it fit with recent events in his life and that makes the story even more impossible to understand and spoils whatever original ending was there in the 1st place. And in the end they bury Mayte's precious chains of gold (why?) and we have a written message about Prince's spiritual revolution which has nothing to do with Mayte anymore, and that's it, story's over.

Damn, u can say whatever u want about Graffiti Bridge, but this film is a masterpiece in comparison to that absurd piece of crap that was released on video!!!

I'll add that the story in the video slightly differs from the story that's told by the album's unreleased segues, making the whole thing even more confusing.

Does someone understand something that i don't in the middle of that whole narrative mess??? eek

The older I get, the less it makes sense. That "movie" is a hot mess, especially that jail scene is so stupid. Everytime I think the 90s NPG is his coolest band ever all I need to do is think of that jail scene and it quickly puts things in perspective. Dr.Fink, Lisa and Wendy or Bobby Z. would have asked "WTF?" before shooting that scene.

Reminds of how Eric Leeds commented on some of Prince´s short movies, like The Hard Life etc.

Equally stupid. But this one takes the cake when it comes to stupid storyline. What the hell was he thinking? How much money did he pump into this project?

Some more videos in the vein of "The Undertaker" would have been a much better idea than this weird oddity.

I really like "The Beautiful Experience" though.....that is one underrated masterpiece. Not as addictive as "The Undertaker" but has a much better message and story than most of his other video films. And it was very ahead of its time. nod

Prince just wants U 2 look at him!! lol (but not in the eyes) rolleyes

self indulgence at its best and the beginning of the end. I think he became just too big and his ego went into overdrive. That was about the time i started to lose interest. I could relate to the rebel Prince, i could not relate to the big head, big pimp he became.

You see, it's all about the girl he shags in the Sexy MF video. She's hot. So if you take that, in light of the seven guys who killed Mayte's father, and the carousel, combined with the concert in Japan, and the nerdy guy in The Max video, not forgetting Kirstie Alley as the reporter, you begin to see that...

Aw, fuck it. The girl in the Sexy MF video was hot.

Hey man, we're Prince fans. We do what we can. lol

There was a video for "And God Created Woman". It was previewed at the end of the Sexy MF maxi video that was sold. But it was never released like most Prince videos. Prince had on the see through black chain outfit he wore in the "7" video....

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

I don't get why people call this a film, or a movie. It was never advertised or sold as such.

But i like it. I tried, once to work out the "story," but gave up, what's the point?

People should just enjoy it for what it is, a collection of (unfortunately edited) Prince videos.

Getting hold of the unreleased segues from the album will just confuse you further.

Prince probably forgot all about "the story" even before it was released, he would have been poncing around with his next masterplan, and so should we, forget all the stuff between the songs and enjoy the music.

The complete story is told in a comic book. It makes sense there, and only there. The video/movie is very poorly edited.

Well, i'd like those of u who say u like it 2 xtrapolate biggrin

Kooleaze i wonder as u do what Prince was thinking lol The Beautiful Experience made sense because there wasn't much of a story: basically it's a depressed girl who witnesses a series of songs and the lyrics and music make her feel better. This storyline, simple as it is, makes sense as it is, while 3 Chains O'Gold is trying 2 tell a story that no one but Prince understands.

The thing is that, Mikey is right: basically it was just a collection of videos, and if it'd been released in the hype of the prince album and had featured great videos in their entirety, i'm quite sure that no one who'd have cared, but...

1) If the videos had been amazing the crappy storyline woulda been easily 4given, but one has 2 admit that most of the videos actually looked cheap. I mean, compare this collection to the Diamonds And Pearls video collection or to Michael's Dangerous video collection and u'll c what i mean. Most of these videos (independently of the music) just didn't deserve all the hype.

2) The video was released in august 1994, while all promotion and hype for the october 1992 prince album was completely over by july 1993. The general public had no more interest in it and the core fanbase was totally obssessed with the whole Come/Gold project at this point. It was just way too late 4 this video collection and that contributed to its release being perceived as a disgusting scam by most of us.

The video's release was delayed. Why? Most likely because Warner wanted to focus on The Hits Collection video in 1993, so they choose 2 postpone 3 Chains O'Gold in favor of the greatest hits package. By 1994, Warner had started 2 understand that their relationship with Prince was fucked up 4 good, and they wanted to capitalize as much as possible on the very xpensive 1992 contract. I don't know it 4 a fact but i really believe that Warner asked Prince to deliver the film and not the opposite: by summer 1994, Prince had already 4gotten the whole prince project in favor of new things, and it's likely that he didn't care at all about this video collection anymore. But Warner asked and Prince delivered.

Now we all wondered: why on earth were several videos butchered (i.e. edited) like this? And what happened to the 5 songs that had disappeared despite videos being shot 4 them?

Well, there r 2 possible reasons and both were the direct consequence of the film's release being delayed:

1) I really think that Prince purposedly decided 2 ruin the film, just 2 piss WB. I mean this was war! So WB wanted 2 make money outta 3 Chains O'Gold? Very well: Prince would make the film as bad as possible. There4 the film wouldn't sell and WB would be pissed. And besides, the more recent Beautiful Experience film would look 100% superior to this one. So Prince removed 5 songs outta 16, and edited most of the remaining songs 4 no reason, just 2 ruin the whole project. This might sound a bit paranoid, i know, but honestly what other xplanation could there be? How could Prince possibly think that the film was better with the songs edited or removed?

2) It's likely that the video had a different ending when it was conceived: by late 1992, Prince hadn't decided to change his name to a symbol and he still had faith in his relationship with WB. By mid-1994 it was a whole different story, and since the whole prince album was both a prelude 2, and the original cause 4 Prince's feud with his label and namechange, Prince tried to integrate the film in his communication strategy, hence Mayte's letter and Prince signing a contract with the Japanese label. This actually ruined whatever story was in this film, because it's all centered around Mayte and suddenly it switches to Prince's name & label problems and there's absolutely nothing connecting both "storylines".

3) If released in 1993, in its original form, the film would mostly have been just the next video collection, related to an album in particular with some loose storyline no one'd have cared about. But it was altered to fit the namechange/WB feud and released in 1994, just like that, in the middle of nowhere one could say. Therefore, it wasn't perceived (or intended) as just an album's video collection: it had become a thing in itself, both a statement and a work of fiction. And therefore what coulda been a decent video collection became a bad movie.

By extention, this whole mess generated another fiasco: by postponing 3 Chains O' Gold's release in order to release The Hits Collection, WB postponed the release of The Undertaker and The Sacrifice Of Victor in order to release 3 Chains O' Gold. And once again, videos that'd have been exciting if released in mid-1994, in the whole namechange hype, were outdated in march 1995 - a lack of interest stated by Prince himself when he chose to release them as Prince instead of prince.

So yeah, that film sucked anyway IMO, but if it'd been released as originally conceived, and between july and october 1993, the disaster would have been much smaller.

I have to admit that i'd completely 4gotten this comic, which i never read anyway. Could u please sum the story 4 us and let us know basically what it was all about? I'd really like to understand what Prince's idea was in the 1st place. Thanks biggrin

I like it too nod Prince attempts to "explain" the storyline of the album, with videos that are linked together. As 'Graffiti Bridge' proved, storytelling isn't one of Prince's strengths and he doesn't totally succeed with 'Three Chains O Gold' either, but at least the videos are exciting.

No, that's not well-said. No one expects messages of world peace from Prince. In fact, I bet most people would like it if he just stopped talking about politics altogether.

Can't people have a fucking opinion (re: laurarichardson's quote)? Seriously - negative or positive, stop trying to remove people's ability to have an opinion. You can have your super saccharine opinion and everyone else can have their piss and vinegar opinion, never the twain shall meet, and everyone is happy because they can judge how they see fit. Good fucking lord, grow up.

True, the unreleased segues just add to more confusion. While I agree that it wasn´t really advertised as a movie like, say, Under The Cherry Moon or Graffiti Bridge, there was still a lot of hoopla surrounding at least the whole concept of it, from the Act I tour to that commercial with some footage shot in Egypt and then of course the whole "rock opera" and Egyptian princess storyline and concept of the prince album.

He must have put SOME thought into the whole project, and I think it is indeed a project that is worth discussing ( and also criticizing and analyzing), just like we talk about his other projects.

Where else if not here would be the right place to do this if not on a fansite dedicated to Prince?

I bought it and enjoyed it when it was released and didn´t even expect a big movie or anything because by the time the video was released the whole project was already over and looked a bit like a hodgepodge of interesting but not really well executed ideas. Egyptian princess? Rock opera? The NPG in jail? The seven assassins?

Oh please lol .

To each his own, I´m sure there are people who see nothing wrong with this release ( and as I said above, back then I was just happy to have another officially released video) but I think it just hasn´t aged very well.

The Undertaker and the Beautiful Experience on the other hand are still, at least in my opinion, very enjoyable and timeless ( The Undertaker in particular). The Beautiful Experience is, IMO, one of his underrated masterpieces...great music, great band, an interesting era, high energy level and I even like the little storyline in it....very futuristic and way ahead of its time when you consider that this came out in 1994 and already dealt with issues like cocooning, loneliness in times of the internet, depression, internet addiction etc.

All in all.....it´s just a video released way too late and edited way too heavily by a pop star who was in a weird place in 1993.

I agree partly about what you say about The Undertaker. However, 3 Chains O Gold, The Beautiful Experience, and even The Undertaker were imo spoiled somewhat with these quite lame "plots" or stories intertwined with the music. The Beautiful Experience could have been a great document of what a Prince gig was like around that time, but instead we get fantastic concert footage interrupted with a story, of sorts going on inbetween. Same deal with The Undertaker, the original Undertaker video should have been left as it was, (it was altered slightly for the official release. The original version concentrated on the live performance aspect, leaving out the footage of Vanessa Marcil). I'm not saying that these were all terrible ideas, but i am saying that i think that the majority of Prince fans would have liked things like The Beautiful Experience, The Undertaker and 3 Chains, to be music videos, uninterrupted with sub-plots and models trying to look cool. Still, Prince is Prince, fans are fans, and i respect that we all have different views, these are just mine.

It´s just that I still like them for what they are and the Beautiful Experience´s storyline was not as bad as most of his other concert film projects...maybe it also had to do with the technical problems that were experienced during that show...maybe he had to come up with a light plot to distract from the technical malfunctions that night..... but I definitely think that, just like you said above, the "unedited" and plotless, rawer versions would have probably been fan-friendlier.....not only that...but even non-fans and casual fans find most of the plots in his little movies unbearable. But then again, this is nothing new, really, and goes waaaay back to the days of SOTT or stuff like The Hard Life or that Apollonia 6 mini movie that was online not too long ago ( with alternate versions of some promo clips).

I wonder if the Second Coming movie from 1982 also had a little storyline to it. THAT is something I would love to see one day. I´ve only seen a few pictures of it.

Oh yes, the little storylines go way back with Prince. I suppose that us fans are more resilient to that sort of thing, i remember showing the mentioned videos to people over the years, people who did not like Prince as much as i do, and nearly all of them commented on the parts inbetween songs being too complicated, or distracting.

But we put up with them whether we like them or not, we don't have much choice really. lol

I think I saw it once and wanted to pull my eyeballs out. Narrative vomit, splashed at the senses like confetti from a shotgun.

He should have just put out a concert movie like Sign O The Times. I think this was the true period that P was on extasy.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

Well said.

I guess you do not know sarcasm when you read it. You and many other orgers want the purple one to have some heavy and deep message when you should know by now you are not going to get one or when he does put one out you are going to not agree with it.

Get the fuck over already and yes you are entilted to bitch and bitch about the same old shit over and over again (which is really silly ) but do not get you underwear in a bunch when you get called out for it because you will and not just by me.

Pot meet kettle. You've been bitching about the bitching since I've been on this site. You get the fuck over it already. Why you are continuously allowed to be so nasty to people FOR YEARS on here makes me scratch my fucking head.

Well go somewhere and scratch your head and do not bother to read my post.

I only hit back at people who start with me first and most of you like to dish it out but cannot take it when it comes back at you.

Grow up already and move on from an artist that some of you think is so beneath you.
