COME: A celebration

File:Prince Come.jpg
Come

For me Come is a bittersweet album, as it was the first Prince release since the passing of one of my closest friends and like me a major Prince fan. We used to spend hours listening to Prince albums and talking about it, so to not have that opportunity made it a difficult album to listen to, especially when there were songs I knew he would have loved to hear.

So with a tinge of sadness, I sat in front of stereo, plugged in my headphones, pressed play and laid back on the ground and closed my eyes. It seemed a fitting position to take as the waves that opened the album seemed to crash over me. With a nod to the original track it was based on “18 and over” (and another nod to “school yard crush” with it’s clanging jingle bells) Come is one of Prince’s most sexually graphic songs but with a mellow phrasing and arrangement it manages to seduce rather than come over all hot and sweaty. With a beautiful soaring horn section punctuating the song’s major melody line, and a bass line that just slivers along the fret board Come sets up the mellower feel of the album. And while one of Prince’s more epic album openers timing in at 11:13 it never seems to overstay its welcome slinking and sliding into another phase of seduction and deliverance. One of Prince’s smoothest openers on record.

With headphones on hearing Space I got to hear things I’m sure I would have missed through my main speakers, such as the throws of passion moanings that make this song less outer space as the title might suggest and more inner space – with the lyrics dealing about true intimacy that transcends the physical. With its ethereal mix this song floats through the headset and carries you away with it.

If the first two tracks were seductive in tone, Pheromone reduces the act down to its primal elements. With a driving beat that seems to increase the tension with each passing wham of the snare we get a voyeuristic view of the kinkier side of lust. Whereas the lyrics on first read might have others almost screaming the lyrics, Prince’s vocal delivery is almost from the scene and thus lower in level as if not wanting to be sprung spying. While intriguing the song seems to lack dare I say it a climax and thus feels unsatisfying.

With its hardcore house rave feel Loose! Unfortunately comes across as someone trying to catch up to a musical trend rather than lead it. With Cybersingle and Interactive floating around at this time (both of a similar ilk) I can’t help but wish they were here in place of Loose!

Leaving carnal activity alone for the moment Prince offers up a haunting song in Papa. I love the treatment given to the bass and guitar tracks. With the same kind of intensity of songs off Purple Rain Papa finds Prince really showing his vocal ability to deliver lyrics with passion and angst. And there’s always a rainbow at the end of every rain.

The party jam of the album Race hooked me from the start. Reminiscent of the Diamond and Pearls era, the song sees Prince working those backing vocals. With a pointed social commentary that aims to unify us all under the one race rather than segregate this song inspired me to actually write Human on several forms for a long time after.

With a return to form on the ballad side of things Dark pays homage to the blues roots that all songs of heartbreak owe. A beautifully composed song, the first time I heard it thunderstorms were erupting around me and it seemed fitting. So to this day Dark remains a rainy song for me.

Solo, ok so while I can appreciate the richness in this vocal performance, I have to confess that normally I find myself skipping it. It always feels like a lyric in search of a song, and strangely enough remind me more of Terence Trent D’Arby’s neither fish nor flesh album than a Prince song. Though I do appreciate the double word play of Solo and So Low that exists in the feeling of the song.

Pushing the bounds of the one word titles that each song has Letitgo had radio hit written all over it, and under better circumstances might have been a bigger hit than it was. Probably one of Prince’s most honest lyrics, he seems to take stock of his life, and give up the worries and concerns of where his life was at and leave the baggage behind, and go with the flow. The lyrical metaphors drew me in straight away, and that sing song chorus just makes you want to join in. And over a decade late Letitgo still sounds fresh and relevant to the modern music landscape. And what a beautiful guitar and organ solo towards the end of the track. This is one of the songs I would have loved to have been a fly on the studio wall for, I just find the whole construction of the song so wonderful.

Well what can you say about Orgasm? My only real comment was when I worked in a record store and I would play the cd, this song always drew a few intriguing looks from the record buying public.

Not one of his strongest releases Come still packs a sizeable punch, and quarrels with Warner Bros aside, it deserved greater support than it received. But with most of the songs cobbled together from past recordings, and Prince declaring himself dead on the album cover, it was no surprise that Prince’s mind was elsewhere with the recording of The Gold Experience, the first album by a reborn artist and an album we will discuss tomorrow, but for now pull out Come, play it and let us know what you thought back then and today.

Another great album from the 90s. If anyone saw the Act I, Act II tour, or any of the aftershows then they would have gotten an earful of this release. It seems like the promotion for this album was done before it ever saw an official release. When the official release did happen, many of these songs were a year and a half old. As we all know, Prince had already started working on the Gold Experience by late 93.

I prefer the much faster version of Come than what was finally released on this CD. Pheromone is my favorite track. Missing a climax you say...

"Her eyes are closed but there's no penetration
He just makes her point the pistol 2 his nose
While he masturbates and now I see a tear
Heading down towards her smile
What happens next it all depends upon your style"

Can't get any closer to climax than that! biggrin

hehehe...oh dear.

You know that the first thing Prince says on that album is

If U're 18 and over, come here
I got something 4 your mind

tsk tsk, youngin'! wink

In fact I wasn't much older than you when this came out (either 14 or 15) and I actually couldn't bring myself to buy it, despite being hooked on D&P and prince by then.

I all but forgot about it until this year when I finally bought it - tbh after one full listen I am actually so glad I waited.

I guess you're just getting an education a little bit earlier than most!

(That said, I ended up with the Black Album instead, but at least you can misinterpret a lot of that until you're old enough to really understand it...Orgasm is a little more...um...blunt eek )

This album for me reaches the extremes of my Prince fandom. I has things I think are as great as he has ever done. "Solo" Letitgo" "pheromone" & his all time worst "orgasm" and the licking sounds added to the otherwise great tittle track. Although I always put this album near the top of Prince albums, I still shake my head at all the 90's style Prince atrocities it is saddled with. I prefer this album 100 times better than the "Gold Experience", where Prince reaches his zenith in his 90's style cartoon glittery schmaltz. To me, at least "Come" still had bits and pieces of Prince's originality and genius, almost everything that came after this was just recycled schmaltz looking for acceptance from.....anybody. Here at least he still sounded like he didn't care what you thought.

It will eternally remain my answer to the "what is the most underrated Prince album" question. It's not perfect, but it may be the last Prince album that I can put on and just forget I'm listening to it. If that makes any sense. lol

I mean "Come" "Race" and "Letitgo" are cool, but really I thought the album was lazy and barefaced. Thrown together and bam..we have an album. Loose..mess doesnt flow with the album...Phermone..what was that song that just came on? Papa..I loved the firt part, however the song left me kind of speechless as in..'what just happened'? However I did appreciate his honesty in the tune I admit.

Solo...still don't have an opinion on that one...sound like he wants to cry on that one but can't...Dark...doesnt flow with the album...even if it was nice....Orgasm...appreciated when I got older and hearing Vibrator (Vanity 6 unreleased) for the first time and understood....

The whole thing was like a showcase of songs written while depressed...and didnt flow well. things just didnt add up for me..even if "Come" the song is EPIC.

Great thing about there being so many Prince albums is that there's something for everyone. I love nearly all of this album and like the other parts. I particularly enjoy it BECAUSE it's dark. Not sarcastically "uh-oh Prince is in a bad mood" dark (like Chaos & Disorder), but genuinely twisted and a little broken.

'Come' is one of my favorite albums of P's that just has some much on it that I didn't expect when I first heard it. It took me to another planet it felt like. 4 1/2 out of 5 star album.

An underrated album; even if there are no many classics or "whoa" moments here, nothing here is bad, and it's one of the few Prince albums which feels like a hip/hop-modern R&B-modern funk/rock album without being a sellout.

This kind of sound was perfect for 1994, and the leftovers of this era are GREAT...

Without the friggin' Prince 1958-1993 line, with a lighter front cover and a more enthusiastic promotional campaign, this album could have achieved platinum status by 1995...even with the whole "Call me the Artist Formerly Known as Prince-Fuck Warners" controversy...

Delete Loose!, Pheromone and Solo and add some leftovers instead and you'll have a lost classic:

Come

Space

What's My Name

LoveSign

Papa

Race

Dark

Letitgo

Strays of the World

(hidden track: Orgasm)

Loose! was just a mad/corny dance track that belongs to the vault, really, Pheromone was Peach part II and Solo, well, a bizarre track that should have been a B-Side, due to its freak nature...

The rest of the album is great, specially Come, Space, Dark (underrated reagge/soul track), Letitgo & Papa...

B+

Come is excellent - from start to well not finish, cuz Orgasm is just too much. lol

I heart the rest of this fine album. music

Lovesign should have been on it, right after Dark and before Solo.

Interactive and Acnowledge Me are fine tracks as well, would have been great as well on Come.

There were some really cool remixes of the above back in the day. That's when getting a 12" or CD-Single meant something - new tracks, remixes, a new take on the song.

Come is a strong album. I listened to it alot when it came out and my view of it has only grown. It's a very dark little underground kinda album with some great tracks. The production is probably his best of the 90s - "space" in particular is just a beautiful piece of studio work.

My only problem is the title track - too long and the sex sounds are just silly, and are a definite mar on the album. I also feel like it should have been fleshed out a little bit with a couple additional tracks. Pope and Ripopgodazippa would have been perfect on this record.

"Pheromone" is a definite high point; love the adventurous spirit of this album. "Loose!" is killer.

I only got this album last year. It's good to take out the cd again and add to what isn't on my ipod. I actually looked at the paperwork and I saw Chronic Freeze's name on there smile which now means something.

Come -new to my ipod. Maybe the intial length and the fact that Space blew me away, made me ignore this one. But it's a nice tune. Slow and funky. Lyrics are explicit so no need to read them. I'd rather listen.

Space needs few words. It was love at first sound. In my Prince top 5 songs.

Pheromone - new 1 4 my ipod too. The waves intro on some of these tracks r a great idea. Some interesting parts to this one and there's a kind of hypnotic beat. I'll need more listens 4 it to grow on me.

Loose - not my cup of tea. Interestingly, very electronic. It reminds me of the 1991 house/trance? Track "James Brown is dead," which I didn't like but found annoyingly intriguing. But Loose. No thanks.

Papa - I wonder if this one shouldn't have been called Dark. Heavy track which is why I probably didn't take it on board. However, for its message and the way its done, the music is fitting. I find it strange that it's on such a sexually thematic cd.

Race - I wish I liked this one but it's rappy. Feels too mechanical for me. Idea is good but I think big message songs like this have to carry simpler lyrics to be effective. Cinnamon girl in that sense was a great improvement, imo.

Dark - I listen to this quite often. It's a lovely, sultry tune, clear easy to follow lyrics and has enough salt and pepper to make it interesting throughout. Groovy track.

Solo - this could almost be a meditation song. Therefore, listened to only by deliberate choice. When it comes to alternative music , Prince has got the goods in house to space you out. I'd be interested to know the inspiration behind this one.

Letitgo- I used to listen to this but not anymore. It's a funny song. I don't want to like it because it's not an immediate like yet still I feel compelled by something in it. Probably because I like many elements of it but the chorus "letitgo" I find overpowering. Maybe if it was only the flute without the voices. Pity, because you hear "letitgo" often and the rest of the song has pretty undertones.

Orgasm - needs no comment

Come was the first full P album I got. Since then, I've been hooked on buying his albums because of how each record smoothly transitions into the other. I loved the waves on this album too, I've heard it's darker and more mysterious than TBA (but I haven't heard it so I can't quite say)

Favorites have to be Come, Pheromone, Loose!, and Race. And Space. And Papa. And Solo. Orgasm is a little much for me though, but I definitely cracked a smile.

Wonderful album... "Come". love

After watching The Beautiful Experience, I was excited when I finally got this CD in the fall of 1994.

I believe "Dolphin" the music video was on MTV Europe at the time, and I called Warner Bros. in Copenhagen - and none of those guys knew about The Gold Experience, the "Dolphin" video, all they knew was the Black Album was about to be released too, in the fall of '94. They knew nothing about The Gold album.... strange...

Prince also played "Peach" (with "Chaos & Disorder" - instrumental") at the 1994 MTV European Music Award.

What a great time this was for me. I was really 100% excited...

I love "Come"...... only "Orgasm" is a little hard to hear loud. And "Lovesign" should have been on the album.

I rate "Come" one of the finest Prince albums of the 1990's....

9 or even 9.5 out of 10 from me. music

Pheremone is like Peach???????? eek

not exactly a carbon copy, but for me it was a "Peach sequel": similar drum line, repetitive rhythm, funk/rock sound etc. When I first listened to Pheromone I thought: "oh, ok, another funk/rock song in the vein of Peach, I'm gonna skip this"...I do admit, though, that Pheromone is darker and nastier than Peach, which was light and poppy.

I think that Peach is still the blueprint of rock songs like Pheromone, So Far So Pleased, half of Chaos & Disorder, etc...

or "I can not wait to have come in my ear"

"I love prince's come"

stuff like that...
