I think one is as good as the other. They are similar in that Cyndi didn't change the hook or melody hardly at all, but they are very different styles musically.

Cyndi's was full on in her niche of quirky pop music from the 80's. She really defined it in a way. She took out the pompous nature of Duran Duran's music, and added a tinge of Sylvester or Grace Jones, and she had her own sound. Those synths on her version of "When You Were Mine" were just spot on for her style.

Prince's version was rough, and was almost begging in a way. Cyndi was almost stating the obvious, or the past, like a lament.

One of my favorite Prince songs of all time. I like Prince's version more but I've got nothing but love for Cyndi's.

One thing I like about Cyndi's is that it adds a gay twist to the song.

Without a doubt Prince's version of When your were mine was a Roughin and a Rockin even more in concert. One of those songs that would bring the audience to their feet and making that funky face. Also, I digged Mitch Ryder's version of When you were mine which I think came out about the same time of Cyndi's during the 80's.

I'll second that. I thought Cyndi's version was too pop gummy for me.

Prince's version is the best, it's God damn perfect. An all time favorite.

I have Cyndi Lauper's She's So Unusual album, but I never liked her version of When U Were Mine.

Sorry to disagree..... now.... don't call me a "hater" lol

Back when I bought She's So Unusual it was such a bonus that she covered When U Were Mine. What a great album. Excellent version of that song too.

I'm gonna have to dig the CD out again now... music

Never heard her version. But surely it can't me more 'new wave' than Prince's version

P's version is supreme, its enjoyable as Lauper's cover in my opinion.

Chaka Khan's I feel 4 u is probably an exception..

I really like Ani`s slowed down version w/ Maceo. She turned into something a little diffrent.

Yeah, that's a great version. The only thing that brings it down is the annoying guy going, "Whooooo!" so close to the recorder. biggrin

I could never like her version more, though I checked it out on yt anyway for confirmation.

It's fun wearing a guy's boxers and jerseys etc but how can guy wear a girl's skirts and dresses or other stuff?

"When you were mine, I used to let you wear all my clothes." Generally, guys don't fit into girls clothes and when they want to wear them, that's weird imo.So no definitely Prince's version thanks.

It was a joke actually, Brofie said somewhere that it was a new wave song. Whereas everyone else seems to agree that Prince's version is just a pop/rock song
