My first contribution - A stupid nerdy question

Imagine you're rich enough to afford a private concert by Prince where you could choose the setlist. What would be your setlist (15 songs maximum)?

Here's mine. In no particular order.

  • If I had a harem
  • Irresistible bitch
  • Lady cab driver
  • Let's work
  • Old friends 4 sale
  • The undertaker
  • How come U don't call me anymore
  • Erotic city
  • Tricky
  • Guitar
  • The ballad of dorothy parker
  • Movie star
  • Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance
  • Black M.F in the house

To be honest, I wouldn't want him to perform for me. I would use the money to ask to see his concerts of the past on film!

The Prince of today on stage doing all those great songs just wouldn't cut it!! He doesn't have the attitude, agility, and the right band to be able to perform most of the songs I'd like to hear up close and personal.

I see your point but have you seen him on stage recently ? His new band is really tight (Frederic Yonnet is really bringing something new) and this summer he gave the best versions I've ever heard of early hits such as controversy, litttle read corvette or 1999. He's never been so good as those days with his guitar.

This runs the risk of going off topic but...I'm tired of greatest hits concerts, very few suprises in the gigs I've seen since 04 (?)

That's the feeling i had... i was tired hearing on boots the same few hits... but for the show, the surprise was not the setlist but the new arrangements.

I was happy he played Guitar and Old Skool Company, two of the rare recent songs i really like.

Same here. I thought Guitar was the highlight (along with the major rework of Little Red Corvette).

I think Prince has go the balance wrong. He went from not playing enough hits to now playing too many. He also repleatedly plays the same few hits (Cream, Delirious, Take Me with U, Raspberry Beret) while he ignores the many of the barnstorm smashes (When Doves Cry, The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, Sign O The Times).

I would really like him to mix the set up and start getting interested in his own new stuff like he used to. If he toured tomorrow I think he would get a much better reception from fans and casuals alike if he mixed it up a bit....something like this:

1999

Guitar

I could never take the place of your man

Beginning Endlessly

Controversy

The most beautiful girl in the world

Future Soul Song

The Truth

Sign O The Times

Laydown

Alphabet St

I'd like to see him sing complete versions of songs rather than medleys and stop with so many audience singalong bits. Just sing the songs as if nobody had ever heard them before.

Otherwise I don't really care. I could say I don't want to hear Purple Rain anymore, but every time he does it it is still great.

Someone else kinda said this...but I wouldn't want to see the Prince of now! Once he became a Witness, that sexuality that drew me to him is kinda gone. And with the hip thing it's clear he can't move right, and also because of being a Witness he'll never get it fixed...F.U. Larry!

I hate medleys.. anyone who does them, not just Prince. If I paid to see you live I expect to see the ENTIRE song, not a damm medley.

And I've noticed that maybe one or two people have Purple Rain on their list. I don't NEED to hear it either, quite frankly I've heard it enuff... but if he did play it I wouldn't be mad.

I'm happy that the man's found direction in his life, but unfortunately it means the fans suffer. That summer setlist was a snoozer. :/ I don't care about dudes hips or any of that, he's 52, even if he didn't need hip surgery he wouldn't move like he used to, so I'd expect that anyway.
