One Night Alone era 2001-2003

One Night Alone era 2001-2003

I'm including Rainbow Children Xpectation C-Note mostly because all promotion was during the actual ONA period

I think the 2000s really shined for Prince for his live performances even more that the actual albums. He was on a very good surge that went right up to 2009

One Night Alone visually is almost similar to Musicology, I think the music is probably better.

Prince - Live at the Aladdin Las Vegas (2003)

Prince live performances are the stuff of which legends are made--and the first official DVD from his own NPG Music Club, Prince Live At The Aladdin Las Vegas (NPG Music Club/Hip-O Records), released August 19, 2003, is no exception. Recorded December 15, 2002, during the Las Vegas stop on his most recent tour, the approximately 80-minute Prince Live At The Aladdin Las Vegas brings the Prince experience home.

The concert headlining Prince and the NPG (New Power Generation) also features special guests Nikka Costa, Maceo Parker and Sheila E. With Parker on sax and long-time Prince compatriot Sheila E. on percussion, Prince is backed by a band of bassist Rhonda Smith, keyboardist Renato Neto, trombonist Greg Boyer, saxman Eric Leeds and drummer John Blackwell. Brilliant musician, charismatic performer and one of pop's most influential figures, Prince takes his blazing guitar in hand and rocks the house for several thousand fans.

Delving into his classic '80s era, the party is on as he performs full-blown renditions of "Gotta Broken (Heart) Again" (originally heard on 1980's Dirty Mind), "Take Me With U" (from 1984's Purple Rain), "Pop Life" (from 1985's Around The World In A Day), "Sometimes It Snows In April" (from 1986's Parade, which was also the soundtrack to Under The Cherry Moon), "Strange Relationship" (from 1987's Sign O' The Times) and a brief "Money Don't Matter 2 Night" (from 1991's Diamonds And Pearls) segues into "The Work" (from The Rainbow Children). "1+1+1=3" includes the Ohio Players' masterpiece "Love Rollercoaster" and Prince's own "Housequake" (from Sign O' The Times). An excerpt from a yet-to-be-released song, "U Want Me," is attached to another Diamonds And Pearls track, "Strollin'."

Three more recent recordings get the Princely treatment as well: "Family Name" and "The Everlasting Now" from 2001's The Rainbow Children, and a bonus clip of "The Ride" from 1998's Crystal Ball. In addition, Costa joins him on "Push And Pull" from her 2001 U.S. debut Everybody Got Their Something. Prince and crew also cover "Pass The Peas," the vintage number from The JB's, James Brown's backing band which included Parker, and Led Zeppelin's psychedelic rocker "Whole Lotta Love."

Prince Live At The Aladdin Las Vegas follows the June release via the NPG Music Club of his latest album, N.E.W.S., which contains only four songs, "North," "East," "West" and "South," each clocking in at 14 minutes. N.E.W.S. is Prince's first album of new material since The Rainbow Children, another concept album originally released through his npgmusicclub.com Web site.

One Nite Alone

In a pale blue spotlight
A figure spins around and the voice calls out 2 U:
"Baby, do U like the sound?"
The undulating acrobat ready 2 do your bidding says:
"Come, U must let me dress U
But first, I must do a fitting"
Do U like it fast?
Do U like it slow?
I know it's better if we make it up as we go
And oh, by the way, tell me now, what's your name?
I'll let it sweeten my tongue just once
And never speak it again
Since this is our little secret
Just once and never speak it again
This is our little secret

Untarnished memory in a pale blue spotlight
Oh, let me hear U scream
If U're ready 4 one nite alone...
With me

Lyrically, this period (The Rainbow Children) is a confusing one for me, as i do not really understand what he is singing about, nor do i have any desire to learn. However, musically, this period is very rich imo. He had a great band, and the ONA box set, ONA piano album, Expectation and (to a lesser degree) C-Note, are great albums/e.p's with great music.

I feel the same. For me, TRC is so far out there that I can overlook most of the lyrics.

I think everything from the TRC-NEWS era has taken a little time for me to digest, except Xpectation which I liked immediately (but have since cooled a bit too). Conversely, I initially disregarded NEWS completely, but have since really favoured it.

I didn't 'get' most of TRC until I saw the material performed live, then it clicked, and ONA I really didn't bother much with until years later, and now I think there's some of his best stuff of the decade on there. Actually that goes for the whole period.

I would take a million NEWS-like releases than another 3121 or 20Ten.

Rainbow Children

With the accurate understanding of God and His law
they went about the work of building a new nation:
the Rainbow Children.

The Wise One who understood the law
that was handed down from God long ago
reflected the true meaning 2 his woman every day.
And she surrendered her discerning of it into his care and keeping
4 she trusted he would lead in the right way.
Her children in subjection 2 her, and she in subjection 2 the Wise One.
The Wise One in subjection 2 the only Begotten One.

And 4ever is in subjection 2 God.

As prophesized, the Wise One and his woman were tempted by the Resistor.
He, knowing full well the Wise One's love 4 God,
assimilated the woman first and only.
Quite naturally, chaos ensued and she and 5 others were banished
from the rainbow 4ever.

The Wise One who understood the law that was handed down
from God long ago, held fast in his belief that the Lord
would bring him another one who loved him so.

Digital Garden

The Banished Ones approaching the palace shouted obscenities.
They tried 2 confuse the Rainbow Children and dethrone their king.
Using the lies promoted by the whosepapers, hellavisions, and scagazines,
The Banished Ones constructed a Digital Garden around the palace
That extended throughout the world.
Furthermore, they demanded compensation 4 their time
spent in the palace before the exile.
This was noise! (Fire, fire!)

'So be it', said the Wise One,
And gladly obliged with an invisible deed.
The Banished Ones accepted it
and returned 2 their place of birth in Menda City.
As 4 the Rainbow Children, they began deconstructing the Digital Garden.
Door 2 door they went in search of those willing 2 do The Work.

The Sensual Everafter

2 all his good brothers the Wise One spoke highly of his muse because
her love 4 the one true God was growing with every passing day.
So he said, 2 all a good night, sent them 2 bed early
and invited his muse 2 join him in the Sensual Everafter.

1+1+1 Is 3

As she fell into the Sensual Everafter - out of body, out of mind,
he stroked her hair a hundred times.
And as she fell deeper into the hypnotic unwind,
He counted his way into the suggestive mind.
Planting a seed that bears fruit on the tree.
He said, 'repeat after me, repeat after me, repeat after me,
1+1+1 is 3.'

Deconstruction

One after the other, the Banished Ones fled
as they watched from the distance the destruction of the Digital Garden.
With no more fruit 2 bear from its trees, the haze was finally broken.
And with the rains came the awareness that never again
would anyone ever lay claim 2 the treasures of the Rainbow Children.
As though awakened from a dream, the muse opened her eyes.
This time as queen.

Another great thread. This was an era that had me lost & confused about Prince's musical direction at the time, but now these shows during this era made me respect him even more & came to realize what a great band he had during these years!

His band during this time was incredible, and the production on TRC was crisp, which I totally dug cause I could hear every little nook and cranny of the songs, the little pauses and spaces.

TRC was WAY over my head lyrically so I try not to think to hard when I listen. lol Family Name I do dig tho, as well as Avalanche off ONA Piano. I know folks didn't know what to think of that song, and I'll admit I was a bit taken aback that he would actually go THERE, but I understood what he was saying, since I do know a bit of the history of the Civil War and The Emancipation Proclamation and Lincoln and America at around that time and all that bla bla bla.

My fav from this era tho is definitely ONA Piano. I don't think I ever knew that Prince was capable of such music. If there were an CD that I'd give to someone who thought Prince was just about pop and funk and Purple Rain, I'd give them ONA Piano to listen to.

Xpectation is cool as well but that damn violin kills the music for me. I wish there was a way I could pull that violin off the tracks. Ugh.

Prince esta muerto...

December 13. 2002
on the Tonight Show in Los Angeles
performing The Everlasting Now w/Sheila E. & Eric Leeds & the NPG

The Everlasting Now

Bass...
(We want Prince, we want Prince

Now ...

I knew this dude, he was very cool
He used 2 rule until he went 2 school
Not a normal school that breeds a fool
But the one that teaches men aren't fit 2 rule

That's when he took his pearly crown
He raised it up and spun it 'round
And tossed into the deep blue underground
No longer lead by the ways of men
He looked 4 the kingdom deep within
That's when the drums in his head began 2 pound

Don't let nobody bring U down
Accurate knowledge of Christ and the Father
Will bring the everlasting now
Join the party, make a sound
Share the truth, preach the good news
Don't let nobody bring U down
The everlasting now

(We want Prince) {x2}

Now turn the page, at an early age
This brotha on stage, he was all the rage
He taught an integrated world 2 sing
The color U are don't mean a thing
Everybody's a star all the everyday people sang

He changed the funk, put it in a bag
Then he changed the colors of the flag
But U can't teach a dog new tricks if the tail don't wag
Don't no matter how much money U made
All the cars U got and all the women U laid
If U mess with the flag, 2 them U're still a spade

Don't let nobody bring U down
Accurate knowledge of Christ and the Father
Will bring the everlasting now
Join the party, come on, make a sound
Share the truth, preach the good news
Don't let nobody bring U down
The everlasting now

(We want Prince) {repeated}

All right
Band!

See this girl in her make-believe world
Plastic boobs and clip-on curls
'Round the pole see her big butt twirl
Oh, these are the dreams that do unfurl
Never everlasting

Turn it up!

Don't let nobody bring U down
The everlasting now (We want Prince)
Now

Now watch that girl in her make-believe world
Plastic boobs and clip-on curls
'Round the pole see her big butt twirl
Electric beaches, skin do bake
Vanilla fudge and wedding cake
If U should die before U wake
U got any last requests 2 make?

The everlasting now {x3}
Hit me!

(Hey) {repeated}
Like a, like a pancake, flip me over
I'm done

Johnny B. Well bring the beat

(We want Prince) {x2}

Now

"From this day 4ward till times indefinite,
those who love Christ are the ones who benefit.
All the players' ice melted into one platinum chain,
and in a downward spiral it dripped down the drain."

"U know, this is funky but I just wish he'd play like he used 2
Old scragglyhead sum-a..." {as in sumbitch} {slap sound} Oh!

Don't let nobody (Let nobody) bring U down (Bring U down)
Accurate knowledge of Christ and the Father
Will bring the everlasting now
Join the party, come on, make a sound
Share the truth, preach the good news
Don't let nobody bring U down
The everlasting now,
The everlasting now,
The everlasting now,
The everlasting now,

(We want Prince)

Everlasting now
Tear it up!
We ain't through
It's gettin' sticky
Break, wait, on the one
Psyche!
Keep it still, keep
Put the fork in that, ha ha
(We want Prince)

She Loves Me 4 Me

With this one I can be what I wanna be
I don't have 2 live up 2 no one's fantasy
I could write another 300 melodies
2 her it's just 3, cuz this one, she loves me 4 me

With this one I don't even have 2 comb my hair
I can wear what I want 2 or nothing - she don't care
I don't even have 2 take her on the rollercoaster, see?
Cuz this one, this one, she loves me 4 me

In the morning
When I rise and see her eyes look deep into mine
I find a better place

This one I can tell all my secrets 2
I don't need 2 make her swear she would never tell anywho
Besides I'm the only one she ever really wants 2 see
Cuz this one, honestly, she loves me 4 me

When the night falls
And she calls
I run 2 her side
Cuz she got the ride that I like 2 ride
I like 2 ride it

This one I can take over my momma's house
And I don't have 2 worry what goes in and out her mouth
All she needs is just a little gratuity
She don't like no beef, uh, she just loves me 4 me
She just loves me 4 me
This one, this one, oh, she loves me 4 me

Objects In The Mirror

That's my favorite time with U
Just after we make a movie
The kind that requires the title:
"Parental Advisory"

Let's brush our teeth in the same sink
Don't worry girl, it's cool
We can pose in the mirror
I'm diggin' U diggin' on me, yeah, an' me diggin' on U

We hooked up now, I can try her
I can put my load in the dryer
So much we can share
The same height, weight and body fluid
We've hooked up now, we can do it

I've been waitin' baby (I've been waitin', been waitin')
But it's so hard 2 bear
But the objects in the mirror (But the objects in the mirror)
The objects in the mirror (The objects in the mirror)
Are closer, closer, closer than they appear

I love this era.

One Nite Alone is a gorgeous album. His cover of A Case Of U is heavenly, Pearls B4 The Swine, the title track and Have A Heart are gorgeous also.

TRC/ONA is last time I feel Prince truly cared about the music he was creating.

Fr om this era I own TRC, News and the ONA 3 disc cd. Even tho I really like 20Ten-This era is the way I assumed Prince would continue-low key but intense productions-with no attempt at producing albums with "Singles". In a lot of ways it was far more artisitically driven but also an honest acceptance of how he stood commercially and what his true dempgraphic was
