When was the moment that you realized that Prince had lost it?

Simple question. When was the moment when you realized that Prince had lost his ability to make masterpieces, that his muse was gone from him? When did you realize that his "classic era" was over?

I realized the kid had lost his mind during the 2001 Celebration and the release of The Rainbow Children.

I don't think he's really lost his mind, just a good amount of "mojo".

The name change was the beginning of the downward spiral (along with the "slave"/WB feud), and the awkward ending of his marriage to Mayte and finally his conversion to JW.

Depends what people class as masterpieces and classic era means the old stuff. So in 15+ years time this era will be classed as the classic era too...just a thought

Emancipation / 1996 was when I got my 1st Prince album disappointment:

I like this pop album today,

but after the funk masterpiece of The Gold Experience.. Emancipation was a huge letdown, imo.

New Power Soul...it sneaked into the shops under my radar (which had never previously happened), looked cheap and consisted of totally filler with 3 exceptions...it was also the debut of that 'out of tune' wobbly falsetto he now always uses. Released at a time when his musical output and moral standing did a 180 turn compared to the previous 20 years output and he also event from cool reclusive to doing interviews...where he spouted mumbo jumbo like Larrys puppet and hypocritical shit about "if I want to listen to a machine, I'll put my washing in it and get some work done"...whilst promoting the mist drum machine heavy, sample heavy album he had released to date.

Since then, for me, he had slowly been drowning only now and again gasping air to keep him alive.

When I though that my time for him was really up was 3rd August 2007 O2 gig...I'd never been left disappointed by his live shows until then but the 'show' was just over 1.5hrs long, for large periods he wasn't on stage and kept going up and down on that stupid lift, he looked bored and I thought it was curtains for me...fortunately 21/09/07 reaffirmed that part of my fandom

And for this who say he's genius you must be barmy...up until the prince album he was a trend setter but the second he tried to jump on the down with the kids rave music bandwagon with I Wanna Melt With U and the MNIP remixes he turned the corner and has been trying to keep up (like madonna). If he's a genius it's only because he can't really be un-geniused from almost 20 years ago

Funny, when a person matures and goes in other directions, suddenly they have "lost it". I just can't believe, all the things people say!

Perhaps when many of his fans mature, they will understand where he is going now. wink

He was doing the wobbly voice since the 90s. Just need to pull out any performance of Mary Don't You Weep, Johnny, Insatiable, etc

Barry from High Fidelity - "is it better to burn out than to fade away...subquestion; is it unfair to criticise a once great artist for his modern day sins?"

Where's Prince going, - warming up for Vegas and residency to churn out his hits 'show' after 'show' until he snuffs it and realises Larry was cheap and just didn't want to buy birthday or Christmas cards.

I'm talking about the voice that sounds like a teenager going through puberty...On The Couch, Planet Earth...it was actually insatiable that made me realise how blunt his falsettos are now compared to that song
