love the song however

the lyrics "

Never mind the birdfeed honey

Just tell me your name

You won't have it long if I

get my way in this game

My reputation precedes me

Call it claim to fame

They know me around the world

You want me just the same

this verse just lame and i dont know to who but i know this verse is a diss

hes calling this woman or man or himself or everybody a bird (hence a bird needs birdfeed)

the second verse is pretty much saying hes working and manipulating whoever hes talking about

and he can get whatever he wants because of who he is

this song is about jumping from one woman to another ... constantly beginning endlessly with a

different woman

he is pretty much doing whatever it takes to get what he wants from this person (whatever that maybe)

I think people got that lyric wrong about the birdfeed. I think it's "nevermind this bird(female) behind me just tell me ur name." It makes more sense at least to me when heard like this. I don't see the song the way you do. I think he is telling whoever he is talking to about who he is/was and how people see him. I also think it's beginning endlessly because she hasn't taken that step to be his one and only. So they are always at the beginning never at the middle or the end at least not yet.

Thanks for posting!

but hear me out on this one

look at these lyrics these stood out to me and made me think it was about manipulation

"All of the same minerals and chemicals of space

You carry within your womb

That's how we got to this place

This might seem a bit serious

But if it turns you on"

pretty much saying if i say this and if it turns you maybe we can have sex or something

This song isn't about sex it's about LOVE. Those lyrics are off the hook. Think about it what happens in a womb?

That's how we got to this place

To the person who thinks the lyrics are "never mind the bird behind me" - you're wrong. Just because that makes more sense to you doesn't mean that's what you are hearing, you are so closed minded and wrapped up in your own interpretation that you are ignoring fact. He very CLEARLY says bird feed, to hear anything else is purposeful ignorance.

And the bird feed line is not referring to "bird" in the British slang for female way, it's actually a really fucking clever reference to himself in the past. It's a reference to all the dove references from the 80s, When Doves Cry, the birds he kept at Paisley Park, etc. This album is a throwback to his 80s sound, and the bird feed line is referencing that. It's extremely clever.

That isn't an especially clever reference at all and I doubt that's what it means.

I think the with the "birdfeed" reference, he's saying nevermind the small talk / games, just tell me your name. I wouldn't read much more into it.

It's OK, definately one of the better tracks on the LP.

I find it amusing people seem to find it so 80s sounding - beyond the obvious use of drum/synth sounds, this song would fit EASILY on NPS, it's very reminiscent of the title track especially.

He's singing about a woman he knows but would like to know better. Something has been keeping them apart but he knows she loves him and he's letting her know in this song how badly he wants her in his life. They will be like prisoners yet free when this secret lady reveals her name (and let's him explore her anatomy). He mentions them having dirty hearts. Bible talk. She might be stressed about wanting him and being with him. He's telling her it's not that serious. He wants to get nice but not sure what he means? I think he's admitting the two have been doing something but he wants to go all the way with her. How else could he know love is much too small a word for what she feels for him? Where's Robinhood? lol

It insists upon itself.

well isnt this an interesting little ditty, cant seem to find the full lyrics anywhere online...

but from the lyrics posted in this thread already, sounds like the purple yoda is talkin big again, with great gusts of hot wind pouring forth from his mouth lol

maid marion says she doesnt like a bragger and that he should know that in the 80's it was probably a turn-on for a woman to hear a man boast and puff himself up...

but in 2010 its not really that attractive. wink

she says women like to feel understood, not be told one thing after the next, like how to feel, or what to feel, or even what they should or could feel for a man...

she also says prince shouldnt talk about a woman's womb if he doesnt have what it takes to fill the womb of the woman he's referencing lol

gotta love marion lol

my take on it is not to take any of it seriously, he's just desperate again,

probably dealing with all his low self-esteem and over-compensating as usual by using the affections of a woman as a step-ladder for his ego to get just that little bit higher than her...

high enough to talk down to her but at the same time dropping enough hints to keep her around

classic prince push-pull song, where she has to accomodate his ego all over again and neither of them get anywhere

like a circle - beginning endlessly - over and over - round and round we go - here we go again

well at least he got it all off his chest thumbs up!

this too shall pass

ur right. i'm sorry. its far better that he tell a toddler he wants to fuck her mother.

the fact that he uses the seat of a woman's power (her womb) in an attempt to further his own agenda is not disrespectful at all wink
