the Dream Factory/Camille music era 1986

This is more of fan fantasy/reality thread

Dream Factory is so meshed in the Parade + Sign o the Time album/era/bands etc that I can't help but wonder.

What pics from those eras do you think the DF period would represent. Or any other eras, since he does borrow from his different looks. What songs would be singles, bsides. Would Prince get St Paul and put the Family back 2gether, would Mazarati take it to another level? Would Cat still have been brought into the band?

I've always thought this picture feels like the Dream Factory music

Dream Factory
Recorded in late 1985 during an extremely prolific time, "Dream Factory" became the title track for Prince's next major project. The song was later released on 1998's Crystal Ball 3-CD set, but this alternate version is missing a few lyrics and has a new intro. The intro is representative of Prince's experimental nature and contains samples of other Dream Factory songs "Witness" and "A Place In Heaven" (played backwards). There is also an argument between Wendy and Lisa and a club owner about their age.

Dream Factory

{"A Place In Heaven" plays backwards in background}

Hi, can I see your ID?
Like, we're both 21, U know
And like, I don't have my ID on me
I left it at home and...
U are 2 young 2 be in here
No man, like U're really 2 old 2 care (Witness!)
Ah ha ha, welcome 2 Hollyrock!
U just in time
Got any dreams U ain't using?

This is what it's like in the Dream Factory, oh!

Hollyrock ain't all it seems (Lordy)
Don't get 2 serious, it's just a dream
Don't forget your friends, they're all U've got (Lordy)
Listen 2 the story of a man I am not

Party all night, hangin' out
In the streets more than I be at home
I take a pill 2 wipe away my doubts
But a pill can't cure my bein' alone
Vodka and 7 straight 2 my brain
Put me under false impressions, hide all my pain
Somebody help me, I'm losing control

This is what it's like in the Dream Factory, oh!

Everybody got the big dreams (Hey Lordy)
But nobody got the bucks
Love and trust will help U make it in a world (Everybody)
Where there ain't no love, ain't no love

Dig...
A man came up 2 me, smile in his eyes
He told me I was a saint
So I'm quittin' my friends much 2 their surprise
I can't live up 2 the picture that they paint
Ah somebody help me, I'm losing control (Ow!)

I guess I'm just a sucker in the Dream Factory, oh!

Lordy
La, la, la, la, la (Sucker)
Got 2 drive
(It's just a dream) {x3}
Look out

Do U wanna party?
Do want a pill?
How about a false impression?
(Thrills, spills, chills)

This is what it's like in the Dream Factory, oh!

Ow! Yeah
La, la, la, la, la
Don't forget your friends, they're all U've got
{looped vocals}
Guess I'm just a sucker in the Dream Factory, oh!
(Just a sucker, motherfucker!)

Power Fantastic was recorded mid March 1985
a song based on a composition by Lisa Coleman called "Carousel"
according to engineer Susan Rogers
Prince sang in a corner of the room
It was some of the most intimate experience of her career:
She felt at the very center of artistic creation
Eric Leed, who played a lilting flute solo
walked out of the studio feeling goose bumps
"That's one of the greatest things we ever did," he remembered

Susan Rogers noted this song was "Nailed in one take"

Power Fantastic was supposed to be one
of the cornerstones of Prince & the Revolutions
next project the Dream Factory

Power Fantastic

Late at night when the world's a-sleepin'
U are frightened cuz the power's creepin'
In your room, it's something U're afraid of
Life of doom is what this feeling's made of

Power fantastic is in your life at last
U're a little apprehensive
Cuz what it is, is what U want and need

Minor G is the chord of pleasure
It will be played 11 measures
U will see fire, but U're cool as ice
U are a liar, huh, if U say this isn't nice Power fantastic is in your life at last
U're a little apprehensive
What it is, is what U want and need Power, power Power fantastic is in your life at last
U're a wee bit apprehensive
Cuz what it is, is what U want and need Power, power
A power fantastic

A Place In Heaven
Intended for the Dream Factory project, this song is a lovely, melodic pop tune somewhat in the style of "Starfish And Coffee." Prince sings in his falsetto voice over a sparse piano backing and a light drum machine beat. The second version has Lisa singing lead. The song concerns the importance of maintaining a positive outlook and making the most of the life we have (recalling the theme of "Pop Life").

A Place In Heaven

She wants a place in heaven
But she cannot face the truth
She lives on a rope of self-pity
It only requires a noose
Why are the ones so afraid 2 live
Much more afraid 2 die?
It's as easy 2 imagine laughing
When U really hear a cry
And they sound the same
In hell, they sound the same

U want a place in heaven
Maybe U're already there
Life's what U make it, stop whining baby
Love comes 2 those who care
There must be children in heaven
Ones who know nothing from hate
3-year-old leaders of all colors
I'd feel safer with them in control, control, control, control
3-year-olds in control

We all want a place in heaven
Suites of that level are few
Let's not be lazy, there's no room service
It's all up 2 me and U
Let's not be lazy, there's no room service
It's all up 2 me and U

VISIONS: beautiful piano solo by Lisa Coleman, reminds me of the image of Prince sitting in the window. Mature opening for the album.

It's A Wonderful Day
Intended for Dream Factory, "It's A Wonderful Day" is a fairly nondescript uptempo number, and may have been intended to be replaced at a later time, according to Susan Rogers. Recorded in January, 1986, the song is a positive and upbeat number and features prominent vocals from Lisa and Wendy. Although discarded, some of the song may have been inspiration for Camille track, "Good Love".

It's A Wonderful Day

Oh, sometimes I can't make up my mind
I don't know which yellow brick road 2 take
Everybody makes suggestions but the words don't rhyme
Decisions they don't have 2 live by are easy ones 2 make
Why can't they love me 4 what I am
Instead of what they want me 2 be?

CHORUS:
Oh, it's a wonderful day, baby
2night'll be a wonderful night

It's nobody's fault but your own
If U don't do what U want
I ain't claiming no group solution
That'll work 4 everyone
Just a simple little pop psychology that says

CHORUS

If [God] gets in the way (Sha sha, ooh)
Gets a kiss on the cheek, that'll, uh (Sha sha, ooh, wonderful)
That'll make it all right (Wonderful)
Make it make it make it all right, yeah, yeah

CHORUS (Oh)

Darlin', I know what U're like [What?]
And baby, I know what U're worth
Insecurities never make no money
Animosity kills boys and girls, oh (Wonderful day, wonderful)
It's a wonderful day, baby (Wonderful day)
Why can't U see, why can't U see?
Oh, it's a wonderful day, baby (Wonderful day)
T-t-t-t-t-t-2night, 2night'll be a wonderful night (Uh uh)
(Wonderful day, uh uh)
(Wonderful night)
Everybody get up on the one (Uh uh)
I wanna have fun, get down (Wonderful day, uh uh)
(Wonderful night, U know it's gonna be all right)

Wonderful day
Nevertheless, it's a wonderful day, baby, Lord
2night'll be a wonderful night, sing it
Hey, it's a wonderful day, baby
2night, 2night, I promise it'll be all right

Everybody get up on the one
Papa wanna have some fun
Everybody get down on the 3
Party, baby, U and me
Everybody get up on the one
2night we're gonna have some fun
Everybody get down on the 3
Party, mama, U and me, uh
It's a wonderful day, baby
Party, mama, U and me
Everybody {fade out}

Awesome stuff laid down during this era! I have the boot...dated as July 86 and a little different than the June version written out by Susan Rogers.

I remember reading a track listing showing an instrumental track called "And That Says What?" I have never seen that track listed anywhere else, havent heard it either.

Anyone know the story of this one? Intriguing as Christopher uses the line "And that says what?" a few times in Under the Cherry Moon.

Crystal Ball
Performed by Prince, this alternate take was recorded during the Dream Factory sessions. It differs from the released track in that several vocals by Wendy and Lisa were removed when Prince updated it for his Crystal Ball 3 LP set later in 1986. Also missing is the added instrumentation and sound effects throughout the song, as well as Clare Fischer's orchestra. The updated track was released in 1998 on the Crystal Ball 3 CD set.

Crystal Ball

Expert lover, my baby
U ever had a Crystal Ball?
Expert lover, my baby
U ever had a Crystal Ball?
Expert lover, my baby
U ever had a Crystal Ball?
Expert lover, my baby
U ever had a Crystal Ball?
Ooh, expert lover, my baby
Ever had a Crystal Ball?
Expert lover, my baby
U ever had a Crystal Ball?

As bombs explode around us and hate advances on the right
The only thing that matters, baby, is the love that we make 2night
As little babies in make-up terrorize the western world
The only thing that matters, baby, is the love between a boy and girl

Oh, expert lover, my baby
U ever had a Crystal Ball?
Undercover, no maybe
All 4 fun and fun 4 all

I can't remember my baby's voice cuz she ain't talkin' no more (Ohh...)
Only the sound of love and prayer echoes from the yellow floor, yellow floor (Ohh...)
Huh, she's sayin' - "Dear Jesus, save us from temptation
Dear Jesus, save us from hell
Save us from the madness that threatens us all
Can U hear us? It's hard 2 tell
In your name we pray"

Expert lover, my baby
Have U ever had a Crystal Ball?
Undercover, no maybe
All 4 fun and fun 4 all

As soldiers draw swords of sorrow (Ohh...)
My baby draws pictures of sex (Yes, she does)
All over the walls in graphic detail - sex! (Ohh...)

Everybody say it now
Expert lover, huh, my baby
Ever had a Crystal Ball?
Under... undercover, ha, no maybe
All 4 fun and fun 4 all

Rip it, ouch! Uh

Expert lover, my baby
Ever had a Crystal Ball?
Uh, expert lover, my baby (My baby)
Ever had a Crystal Ball?
Crystal Ball
Expert

My baby, my baby, my baby, my baby
Kiss me, lick me, trick me, whoa!
Eh yeah, yeah
Come on, come on, come on, won't U come on?

Expert lover, huh, my baby
Have U ever had a Crystal Ball?

Don't U wanna?
What my drummer wanna say? {x2}
Yeah! Drummer
Tell me what the bass sayin'?

Yeah
Oh, ow!
Listen 2 my, uh, listen 2 my bass man play
(Alright) (Expert lover, my baby is alright)
(Alright) (Undercover, my baby is alright)
Listen 2 the guitar play
Hey! Wait a minute now
School ya!
Ouch! Guitar, guitar
Come on now
Oh yeah!

My baby licked me fast (A heavenly temple my baby calls)
Come mama, watch your gas (Quietly missiles - some people die)
Come on, baby, do me fast (A gasp of gas clutters the mind)
Come on, come on (And a woman dies in the aftermath)
Mathematical gas

Sisters and brothers in the Purple Underground
Find peace of mind with the pop sound
It seems when we're in danger, everything gets black
Don't U wanna go?
Maybe not

Expert, expert
Uh
Ooh wee!
Darlin', darlin', U know U want a Cry... Crystal Ball
Crystal Ball
I don't know, I have 2 ask my mommy first

As bombs explode around U and hate advances on your right
The only thing U can be sure of is the love we make 2night

Expert lover, my baby

Take off your clothes, baby
Come on, get the Crystal Ball (Ahh...)
Oh, expert lover, my baby

SOTT

The Ball
Written after the Dream Factory project was shelved, "The Ball" is a straightforward party song with no deep message, Prince has "no time for attitudes" and urges everybody to give up "any notion about the way things are" and come to the Crystal Ball to "get loose." Most of music was reused for "I No" on Lovesexy. In fact, Prince even kept the "party talk" that was used as a segue between "The Ball" and "Joy In Repetition." A part of the segue was used once again when most of the original recording of "Joy In Repetition" turned up on Graffiti Bridge. "The Ball" was intended to open side four of the 3-LP Crystal Ball.

Girl O' My Dreams
This rock-oriented track was recorded June 18, 1986, for a Broadway musical, and features the expanded Revolution. The song is about what Prince wants in a woman. It was later drastically reworked and recorded by T.C. Ellis for his 1991 True Confessions album.

Here we go, 2 .. 1, 2, 3!

I want a woman like Marilyn Monroe
The kind of woman that'd never say no
The kind of woman that'd make U scream
"That's the girl o' my dreams!"

I want a woman that'll treat me right
Give me good lovin' all through the night
Take her on a date, she's my machine
That's the girl o' my dreams

CHORUS:
Oh, the girl o' my dreams
Oh, listen people, that's the girl o' my dreams

I want a woman like Lauren Bacall
Old and wrinkled but knows it all
Got all the little tricks that'll make me cream
That's the girl o' my dreams

I want a woman that'll wash my hair
Even wash my underwear
Always smilin', never mean
That's the girl o' my dreams

CHORUS

I would say that U're a chauvinist

No, I just got a lot of things that are on my list!

Yeah, if she couldn't hang, would U give her the fist?

No man, I'd sit her right down and give her a little kiss!

Oh, I need a woman like Lena Horne
Knowed she was funky since the day she was born
Lena's mama say "Doc, is it a girl?"
Doc say "And how!"
Lena smiled, slapped the doctor and said
"Sucker I'm runnin' things now!"

CHORUS

Prince "Dream Factory" 1986

Dream Factory began life in late 1985 after the Parade album was completed. Much like preceding albums Around the World in a Day and Parade, Dream Factory was written by Prince in collaboration with Wendy and Lisa but to an even greater degree. The album started as a single set of nine songs, but evolved quickly to a double album with a large body of tracks being considered or rejected. A final configuration of the album was finished and mastered, but just before the album was to be released The Revolution dissolved amidst personal and professional tensions; Prince then shelved the highly-collaborative album in his infamous "vault" in a desire to return to his "one-man-band" ways of recording."

Big Tall Wall
Written during the Dream Factory sessions, this track was replaced when other songs were recorded for the album. It was also considered for an early version of the Graffiti Bridge album. Sung in a variety of vocals by Prince, the lyrics concern protecting his lover form others by putting her behind a big tall wall. The lyrics also contain the phrase "I've got more holes than a golf course", later used as the segue preceding both "Alphabet St." and "Joy In Repetition". The music is almost demo-like, containing little more than a drum machine and an occasional guitar.

Hey sugar
Come here
I got something 2 lay on your mind

I'm gonna build a big tall wall
Stone circle so U can't get out
Big tall wall
True love is what it's all about

If I see U in a restaurant
Ooh, baby, U're all I want
Your sexy body, your curly brown hair
Try 2 run if U want 2, I don't care!

I'm gonna build a big tall wall
Stone circle so U can't get out
Big tall wall (Sugar darling)
True love is what it's all about

If I see U walkin' down the street
(See U walkin' down the street)
U be the one I wanna meet (U be the one I wanna meet)
U dress so smart (U dress so smart)
U talk so neat (U talk so neat)
U are so fine (So fine)
It's hard not 2 eat'cha, baby!

Big tall wall
Stone circle so U can't get out
I'm gonna build a big tall wall (Oh yeah, ooh)
True love is what it's all about

B is 4 bold, girl that's how U make me feel
I is 4 ignorant, this situation's real (So real)
G is 4 my girlfriend, yah U know
I got another one (G is 4 my girlfriend)
But that ain't gonna stop me and U
From having fun (Stop me, stop me)

Big tall wall
I see U in a restaurant
I don't want nothing else
U're all I want (U're all I want)

Big tall wall
Baby, I'd kiss U 4 Uncle Sam
Pretty little baby, U're so glam
Every time I see U I wanna slam

Big tall wall
Stone circle so U can't get out, get out (U can't get out)
Big tall wall (Yeah, yes I am)
True love, true love is what it's all about

Big (Ooh) tall wall
B is 4 bold, that's how U make me feel
Ooh, big tall, big tall wall
(Don't leave me like this, that's so cold)
Your sexy body, your curly brown hair
Ooh, pretty baby U really take me there
Baby doll, U're so glam
Every time I see U I wanna slam (Ow, uh!)

If I see U in a restaurant (I don't want nothing else)
Oh baby, baby, U're all I want (U're all I want)
Sexy body, your curly brown hair (Girl, girl, girl, girl)
U really take me there (Yeah!)

I'm gonna build a big tall wall
Stone circle so U can't get out
(Build a big tall wall
(I'm gonna build a...)
(Ooh, I'm gonna build a...)
True love is what it's all about
I'm gonna build a big tall wall (Tall wall, tall wall, tall, baby, sugar)
Stone circle so U can't get out (Get out)
Big tall wall (I'm gonna, I'm gonna, yeah)
True love is what it's all about (True)

Stone circle so U can't get out
True love is what it's all about
{lines are repeated in foreground and background}
(Big tall wall)

I'm gonna
I'm gonna build a big tall wall

Baby doll, U're so glam
Every time I see U I wanna slam
U have the nerve 2 walk up my street
Didn't anybody tell U that
My modus operandi left a lot 2 be desired?
I got more holes than a golf course
Oh yeah, U're hot company

Take your time cuz in the back room
I'm building a...
Honey, [little bitch], U're so mean
Every time I see U I wanna sc-sc-sc-sc-scream
(Oh mama, your body's like that)
You wanna rap?

U dress so smart
U talk so neat
U're just my style girl (Tall wall)
U wanna see my... (Tall wall)
U wanna see my walls? (Tall wall) (I see U walking down the street?)
(Let me put U behind my big tall wall)
U wanna see my bridge? (I just wanna eat'cha, honey)
Well what'cha want, what'cha wanna see? (B is 4 bold, baby)
(Let me put U behind my big tall wall) (How U make me feel)
(I just wanna eat'cha, honey) (I is 4 ignorant - this situation's real)
G is 4 my girlfriend (I'm gonna do ya)
U know I got another one
But that ain't gonna stop

Is there any other photo out there of Susannah and Prince together? I swear this is the only one I've ever seen.

And when was this taken? Prince's hair, the cane...they dont fit the era. No biggie...I just always assumed this was 86/87 and wonder if it was later?

blunt music She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies.... music blunt

I could have been 86 because his hair near the end of the Parade tour was grown out

It also has that straight affect like the RaspberryBeret video so it could have been early 85

It

I think about IT baby all the time, all right
It feels so good IT must be a crime, all right
I wanna do IT baby every day, all right
In a bed, on the stairs, anywhere, all right

(Come on)

CHORUS:
I wanna do IT baby all the time, all right
Cuz when we do IT girl, IT's so divine, all right

I could be guilty 4 my honesty (All right)
But I've got 2 tell U what U mean 2 me, (All right) all right
With U, I swear I'm a maniac, all right
U see, IT ain't no joke, just a natural fact, all right (All right) (Come on)

CHORUS

(Doin' IT) IT {x3}
(Doin' IT)

(Come on) {x2}

I could be guilty 4 my honesty, all right
But I got 2, I got 2 tell U what U mean 2 me, yeah, all right

Yeah (Come on) Yeah, come on

I wanna do IT baby all the time, all right, yeah
Cuz when we do IT girl, IT's so divine, all right

With U, I swear I'm a maniac, all right, yeah (CHORUS)
U see, IT ain't no joke, just a natural fact, all right
All right

I wanna do U baby all the time, all right (Yeah ooh)
(U see, U make IT so good, IT's so divine, all right)
Cuz when U do IT girl, IT's so divine, all right

I'm gonna think about IT, I'm gonna think about IT, baby
All the time (Think about IT all the time)
Fuckin' on your mind now (Feels so good, must be a crime)

Doin' IT, doin' IT {x4}

(Come on) {x2}

(All right)
(IT feels so right, it must be a crime, all right)
(I wanna do IT, I wanna do IT, all right)
(All right)
(Cuz when we do IT, IT's so divine, all right)
(All right)
(Come on)

My FAVORITE next 2 POWER FANTASTIC

the layers and depths and you feel the band connections

"a dense & busy jazz fusion piece, featured live playing by most of the Revolution & drumming by Sheila E." - Susan Rogers

In A Large Room With No Light
Eric Leeds' sax starts off this busy,
animated rock number with jazz overtones.
The song has a lively spontaneous feel,
recorded with the expanded Revolution.
The music contradicts the serious lyrics,
which concern the harshness of life and feelings of being lost.
Prince compares life to "looking for a penny in a large room with no light".
Originally considered for the 19 track,
2-LP Dream Factory, the song was later dropped.

Lana drew a picture in school 2day
One that made her mother cry
A picture of a woman with a drink in her hand
Standing by a child with no eyes
Washington reaction based upon revenge
Babies blown 2 kingdom come
Damn the logic
Cartoon characters look better when they're on the run
Danny dropped the dime on his girlfriend
He said he didn't wanna go 2 jail alone
The seed lives in the same mind
With the thought that says we all should be stoned
And people lookin' 4 angels in the sky
Whenever they're broken-hearted
Love is grown, seeds are sown
A fire don't burn unless it's started

Did U ever feel that life was like lookin' 4 a penny
In a large room with no light?
A sophisticated man reduced 2 company in no-win situations
That aren't right

Every time U wake up there's a little motherfucker
Talkin' big stuff in your face (Are U happy?)
U only get the kind of people that open their mouth just 2 swap feet
Welcome 2 the rat race

Did U ever feel that life was like lookin' 4 a penny
In a large room with no light?
A sophisticated man reduced 2 company in no-win situations
That aren't right

Oh, if U could just pass your history class
Maybe life would be alright
Until then U'll be lookin' 4 a penny
In a large room with no light

Yeah!

Life {repeat 2 fade}

Witness 4 The Prosecution
This raw, hard, bluesy rock number featuring Prince's guitar was recorded during the Dream Factory sessions. It was embellished with horns and background vocals by Wendy, Lisa, Susannah and Eric Leads. Prince uses a court analogy in describing his love/hate relationship with his woman.

Witness 4 The Prosecution

I am a witness 4 the prosecution of a hate in this love affair
I who am guilty of nothing but always wantin' 2 be there
Mama, I swear I love U, I always have
In school I once traded chairs
If I couldn't be near U, I wanted what was yours
Now I just want U 2 care

I am a witness (Witness)
I am a witness 4 the prosecution of a hate in this love affair
(Witness 4 the prosecution)
Aah yeah

Whatever it is U think that I did
U're wrong, I wouldn't even dare
Cuz U know
I am a witness 4 the prosecution of a hate in this love affair
(Witness 4 the prosecution)
Yes I am
Don't U know I am ...
I am a witness, witness (Witness 4 the prosecution)

Witness 4 the prosecution {x2}

I am a witness 4 the prosecution of a hate in this love affair, yeah
I who am guilty of nothing but always wantin' 2 be there, be there
Oh, I swear by heaven I love U, I always have
In school I once traded chairs
If I couldn't be near U, I wanted what was yours
Now I just want U 2 care

I am a witness 4 the prosecution of a hate in this love affair
(Witness 4 the prosecution)
Yes I am
Let me tell U, whatever it is U think that I did
U're wrong, I wouldn't even dare
No, no, no (Witness 4 the prosecution)

(Witness 4 the prosecution)
(Witness 4 the prosecution)
Witness, witness
Witness, witness
Witness, ooh, witness
Witness 4 the prosecution of a hate in this love affair

Witness, witness
Witness 4 the prosecution {x2}

Guilty, 7 years hard labor, take him away!
