ONA-Live box.

I have been going back and listening to some Prince albums that i have not heard in a while, and my most recent rediscovery has been the One Nite Alone...Live 3 disc box set.

The complaint i have is that i would have prefered one gig, with no interruptions, start to finish. I understand the idea of giving people an overall idea of the scope of the ONA tour, but i do not like live compilations. However, the music is mostly top drawer imo.

There seems to be a lot of negativity about this set, the old overdub complaint among many, but come on, is it really that bad? What's not to like?

I have tried to listen, but I only like 3 songs from this set:

Strange Relationship,

The Everlasting Now

&
Joy In Repetition (aftershow)

the rest is too jazzy,

terrible set imo.

I hate Prince doing jazz. sad

I'm 100% with you Mikey.

I think the live setting breathes a ton of fresh air into some of the RC trax that were otherwise pretty stale.

I do wish the set list was more varied and included a few older trax. But outside of that, I think the first two CDs with the proper set are pretty darn good. The editing of songs between shows means absolutely nothing to me. The original Prince songs (without the 4 or 5 covers he was doing each night) sounds great to me.

That being said, the aftershow disc is horrendous. I still can't believe how flipping bad the edit is from Joy In Repetition to the next song (is it We Do This). The aftershow disc really suffers from song selection and editing.

I agree, surely with the amount of aftershows played on the ONA tour, a better selection of songs could have been found.

I was at the BODP taping at HOB on the aftershow disc. It could of been SOOO much better if he just included the whole show. A blistering version of Calhoun Square followed by a surreal version of Beautiful Strange that I remember to this day. Ahhh well more of the same from the editing king from hell.

Seems to be a low point with this collection, sounds like a good show and you are lucky to have been there, it's a pity the actual disc does not seem to be a very good momento of your experience.

Xenophobia is on it, cd-1 track 3.

Though there is a better version of this track on the promo cd One Nite Alone Live E.P, with less band introductions.

oh yeah! I'm thinking of the Alladin video. I'm gonna listewn right now to hear it. How was this different than the EP type live ONA thing that came out? It's all getting cloudy in my mind.

The E.P version sems to be the same track, the version from the box set appears to have vocal overdubs (band member shoutouts) and is about a minute longer in length.

It is like two different versions edited together, sounds shit, but it seems to work for the better.

I only just discovered ONA recently and I kinda liked it

What always makes me falloff is during Anna Stesia when he talks about worshipping God and 20 churches in a 1 mile radius and immediately continues on the NPG music club members, how they have the good seats and that people should join to have the good seats.

God & makin' money apparently goes hand in hand .. at least in Princey's world!

I absolutely LOVE the 2-discs of the main show. The aftershow I don´t like that much.

I was worried at the time when I heard that it wouldn´t be a whole show but a compilation from different shows, but when I heard it I was amazed how well everything fits together. I don´t hear that it isn´t a whole show. I don´t agree with all the negative comments here at all, I simply love this great great live album and listen to it a lot!

I personally love this set. I never had any complaints really, didn't know what to complain about & then I would come on the org here & see a lot of folks bashing it.... it's beyond me but guess I'm just easy to please. I guess I can relate to the complaints but I was over it before I saw any bytching about it.

I listened to it, and now I remember that I wished it had been another version where he talks about going through the airport security at the beginning...not the blood interpherons stuff...

i think the airport security phrases were really cool. But I seem to remember a pro version that had that part... thought it was the EP version. Where did I hear that?

OMG! I am SO glad U said that! I remember hearing that thinking "wow, what a great way 2 join 2gether and get higher as 1 people... Wait a minute, you're hawking your goddamned music club?!"

I thought that was a rare classless moment from our boy.
