PRINCE: LOOKING BACK 1984

On this date in 1984, Prince launched his

"Purple Rain" tour. The tour in support of what would become his

most popular album began in Detroit. Purple Rain spent 24 weeks at

the top of the charts.

1984 was Prince's year. nod

"When Doves Cry" was this year's best selling single in the US according Rolling Stone, with about 2 millions copies.

Prince was at #1 with:

the movie Purple Rain,

a single

and the album Purple Rain

all #1 at the same time in 1984. I suppose the single was When Doves Cry...

To be #1 with a single, an album and a movie at the same time, was something only Elvis Presley and The Beatles had done before.

Prince even scored an Oscar.

The tour was stunning.

What Prince achieved in 1984/1985 was absolutely fantastic.

I might have to agree. It was the year I graduated high school, got my first job that wasn't only minimum wage, Purple Rain, Double Nickels On The Dime, Zen Arcade, Born In The USA, 1984(Van Halen), Like A Virgin, Say What You Will Clarence and Fugazi came out. Plus I got to see myself on the big screen in Purple Rain - even if it was for just a couple seconds.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

You were in PR, SG?

That's great. Would love to read a thread about your experience - how it came about, what you saw etc.. Give us some screen caps of your scene too

That's me by the squad car with a little bit of my white shirt hanging out from under my coat. Blink and you'll miss it.

The short version: They were filming near my house in Minneapolis and we headed over there after school to watch. Magnoli asked if anyone wanted to be in the shot and I stepped forward. He gave me brief instructions and they did two takes. Both with the cop car coming down the street and up into the yard, but with different siren sounds. The camera was behind me on a tracked dolly.

Prince never came out of his trailer, but his stunt double did. We watched Apples and Morris do a couple of scenes that didn't make it into the film. All of the cops in the house after Francis L shot himself were local police that I, uh... somehow knew.

May I ask what the scenes were about between Morris and Apples? Was the ones where Morris picked up Apples when she was running out of Prince's house after hearing his parents arguing upstairs the night of the "Beautiful Ones" score? Car ride and everything...

We couldn't hear the conversations, but I remember there was some kind of confrontation between Apples and Morris in the script. That's also how their gestures looked as they acted the scenes out. The scenes took place outside The Kid's house.

Awesome! Then, based on my reading from the drafted script, that scene must be the one smile Unless it's just something totally different from an earlier draft.

Thanks for sharing! Really fun smile

After a while, with a large crowd gathered outside a trailer, out steps a man dressed in the complete Purple Rain garb. Thing is, he was about 6 friggin' feet tall. When it became evident that it wasn't Prince, here were a lot of disappointed teenage girls that night.

Well from the moment Prince wouldn't let me do the guitar solo-it was on like Donkey Kong. (Okay-so did not happen. 1)you have to be able to play guitar 2) You have to have talent. So,so lacking in both. disbelief) Well, it's no big deal really. If you think about most of the ORG and then some are in the vault. I mean hasn't most of the last 20 years or so of concerts been filmed? We are all "featured" in a concert film one way or another. Essentially, I was feeling the groove and I was focused on by the camera. fro
