Small Prince reference on Taylor Swift"s New Album

"My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys" includes the line, "The voices in his head called the rain to end OUR DAYS OF WILD."

At first, I thought this could be merely conicidence so I googled the phrase "Days of Wild," and it certainly seems Prince orginiated that exact particular phrase.

Nothing earth-shattering, but I thought it was sort-of cool that either she, or one of her collaborators, were at least familiar familiar with that song.

BTW, I've been a member of the org since the dinosaur age but for some reason I couldn't get back my old handle: sro100.

These are the days of wild!!

Something tells me prince did not originate this phrase.

I specifically said that EXACT phrase, not a Hong Kong film that no one has heard of called "Days of Being Wild."

Yes, I was aware of the film title before.

I could easily see Jack Antonoff, the producer, being knowledgable on Prince.

Who knows, Taylor seems pretty well schooled in music?

The film is incredible though, and by probably the best (and best known) HK movie director ever.

Tarantino was promoting Wong Kar Wai films heavily in the US in the early 90s and it’s very conceivable Prince would have known about it. Thematically, it might have appealed to him, too.

If you’ve really never heard of it, please seek it out! It’s a perfect entry to Wong Kar Wai’s work.

It is indeed possible Prince heard of the title, or perhaps even saw the film. We know he was an avid movie goer; back in the time of the apes he used to frequent a movie theatre in St. Louis Park, Minnesota that I worked at.

But...in any case, his phrase, or his unique turn on that phrase, is still his.

Maybe I'll give the movie a watch; Quention Tarantion has "introduced" me to many movies that have become favorites.

Wkw is great indeed. Or was great. Idk if he still is. I dont know how popular that film wouldve been in the states, it was chungking Express that Tarantino really got behind, but its possible. Days of wild though just seems like it mustve come from somewhere as it doesnt sound like a remarkable phrase. ..

Y'all really stretching on this shit. It's still 100% false. Prince didn't coin the phrase "Days of wild," for fuck's sake.

some other links:

the last song on the TS album is clara bow. everyone knows prince mentioned her on condition of the heart. this is obv why she named her song clara bow.

there is a song named the smallest man that ever lived. shes talking about short men. maybe not complimentary, but clearly inspired by prince. also see: little old me. again, short people. prince was in her mind.

then there is a song called the prophecy. nuff said.

the song robin. allegedly about robin power. maybe TS saw graffiti bridge one night with jack antanoff.

i hate it here. a response to i LIKE it there from C&D. like when prince wrote rock n roll is alive in response to lenny kravitz. taylor is just replying a few decades late.

i can do it with a broken heart. if this doesnt scream out prince, idk what does. thats exactly the kind of thing prince would write. also a variation on gotta broken heart again. but TS is spinning it like prince might have done. shes saying shes broken, but she can still fuck. basically a we can fuck for the 2020s.

I haven't posted on here in years. Who is y'all?

I'm not, in the least, trying to make a connection. I heard the line and had no idea if Prince originated the phrase or not. I looked it up. It appears he did invent the phrase. Why is that so impossible to believe?? Really?

Why is it so impossible to believe that someone, a producer or someone or even Taylor Swift herself, would be, somewhat familiar with Prince?

I never inferred, implied or suggested that it was anything other than a reference.

Okay Professor, show me an example of "days of wild" being used before Prince used it?

Are you schizophrenic?

In your previous post, you acknowledged that it was possible and then this???

I could honestly care less about if Prince has any influence on Taylor Swift.

But, only on this vitriolic platform, is it considered blasphemy to suggest anyone, other than hardcore fans, have any Prince knowledge.

It's like when Mariah had The Emancipation of Mimi, every one thought she was referencing Prince; as if he created the word, or idea of owning masters or fighting with a record company, when Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder was doing it twenty years before.

Trivial Pursuit, aka, the legendary Ernest Sewell, has been a mainstay of the Prince-trolling world, oh since, the glorious days of amp.

He is not worth engaging with, or "responding" to because he argues just to argue and would never, ever, admit he is wrong even if God, Jesus, Buddha, Prince, or in this case, Taylor Swift, told him he is wrong.

Ernest, the "onus" is on you to prove "days of wild" did not originate with Prince since I already did the seemingly impossible task of using Google to find the origin of a phrase.

I'm glad to see some things never change biggrin

Not worth responding to, yet you wrote 104 words including 467 characters (not counting spaces) to talk about how horrible I am. I'd let you ride if you just asked nicely, baby.

And nope. I never made the claim that Prince coined the phrase. Someone makes a claim anywhere, it's up to them to prove it. Just like in court. Someone makes a claim, the burden of proof is on them.

By the way, the first and another definition of "onus" is BURDEN OF PROOF.

Inspiration comes from within.

Now you see, that phrase just came straight from my heart -- but Prince said it too, didn't he?

So this is the perfect (unintentional, in the moment) example of inspiration, and how 2 people (or many more) can be inspired on their own... to come up with the very same phrase.

No, that is not how it actually works. Someone made a claim, and then you refuted that claim. You said Prince didn't coin the phrase, which would leave anyone with sense to conclude that YOU know who did coin the phrase. Therefore, the onus is on YOU to provide the evidence that will show who said it first, before 1994. If you don't do that, then we simply have to conclude that Prince, in fact, did coin the phrase. The burden of proof has to come from you. All we have is that Prince debuted the term in 1994. The conclusion is that he came up with it. If you know something we don't then, again, the burden of proof has to come from you.

They have to prove the claim to begin with. It's like the argument of "God exists." Really? Then prove it. You believe it to be so, so show me the proof God exists.

Claim: THIS IS MY LAND!

Person: Prove it.

Claimer: (pulls out deed)

Science: We're 3 degrees from apes!

Person: Prove it.

Science: (pulls out DNA etc to show comparisons thereby proving the claim is true)

The fact that no one can substantiate the claim about "days of wild" really does close the case, though. Y'all fighting so hard for something made up, and after - what did they say? - a quick google that "it certainly seems Prince orginiated that exact particular phrase." Where's the proof?

I could say the sky is plaid. If you say it isn't, you'd say, "really? I don't see that. where's your proof?" Ergo, the burden would be on me to prove the sky is plaid.
